How Naked and Afraid is produced – reality blurred
For a series with a sensational title, Naked and Afraid continues to deliver authentic and highly entertaining episodes each week. I talked to executive producers Steve Rankin and supervising producer Mathilde Bittner about how the on-location production works. Our conversation took place last August, when Mathilde flew to L. The series has a very small crew on location: a director of photography, a camera assistant, an audio person, and a producer.
Before us, there is a clearing, with a primitive shelter made of bamboo and leaves. A nude man, covered in tattoos, lies in repose, facing away from camera. A naked woman is seated beside him, and tends a small fire. Both are covered in dirt and bug bites, and appear ragged and hungry.
When the Discovery Channel invited me to audition for its popular survival-challenge reality show, I knew it was going to be rough. What followed was one of the most intense experiences of my life. They face predators, parasites, sunburn, cold, hunger, and each other. The finished episodes, with their blurred genitals and Edenic concept, are strangely wholesome, family-friendly.
